May the holiday season bring you joy; may the new year be all you could wish for, and may these flowers, in all their unique and wonderful glory, bring a little light into your life.

The Singular and Cheerful Life by Mary Oliver
The singular and cheerful life
of any flower
in anyone’s garden
or any still unowned field–
if there are any–
catches me
by the heart,
by its color
by its obedience
to the holiest of laws:
be alive
until you are not.
Ragweed,
pale violet bull thistle,
morning glories curling
through the field corn;
those princes of everything green–
the grasses
of which there are truly
an uncountable company,
each on its singular stem
striving
to rise and ripen.
What, in the earth world,
is there not to be amazed by
and to be steadied by
and to cherish?
Oh, my dear heart,
my own dear heart,
full of hesitations,
questions, choice of directions,
look at the world.
Behold the morning glory,
the meanest flower, the ragweed, the thistle.
Look at the grass.
So much gratitude to all of you who follow, like, and comment. I may create the posts, but it is all of you who give the blog life. Thank you!
Next several posts: In the new year I shall begin sharing stories of my seven years in the wilderness – cooking in remote hunting and gold mining camps, and living in an isolated village in the far northwest of Canada. It was quite a slice.

Indeed, it’s time to see this winter through and start thinking about the spring flowers that are just preparing to bloom someday. Just as your stories of gold mining camps will bloom and make the coming months shine.

Hi Alison and Don, I’m checking in on you to see how you’re both doing. We haven’t heard from you in a while and wondered what you’re up to. James and I have both been a bit sidelined this year with family events (My youngest sister Susan finally got her kidney transplant after waiting 4 years on dialysis! Yay!) and recovering from sprained muscles. So we haven’t traveled – yet – or published too much. Hopefully this fall we’ll be back on the road. Hoping that you are both doing well and look forward to catching up with you. Big (( HUGS )) Terri & James ❤

Hello you two! How lovely to hear from you.
We are both well, and enjoying summer in Vancouver. We also have not been travelling though we plan to go to Montreal for Christmas with family, and spend 6 weeks in Playa del Carmen in Jan-Feb.
I’ve not felt like keeping up with the blog. This is for sure the longest I’ve gone without posting in about 15 years! I have plenty of stories to tell though not the inclination at the moment.
Sorry to hear about your sprains (not fun I’m sure) And hope you’ve made a good recovery. But what wonderful news for your sister.
Big hugs from us back to you both!
Alison and Don

Alison it’s wonderful to hear from you, and so glad that you are doing well. Christmas in Montreal sounds lovely, and Playa del Carmen in the winter – bliss! You’ve definitely got the right idea! I think that keeping up with a blog can ebb and flow – and you just have to follow your heart. It’s a joy to talk with you again and I look forward to keeping in touch. ~Terri

We’re currently house sitting for three weeks for friends who live on the far west side of Vancouver. They have a beautiful garden to hang out in, and it’s a 2 minute walk to the beach and a big park. It feels like a summer holiday.
What are you two up to?
