About a year ago we were in Australia and had rented a house at the beach at Malua Bay for two weeks. For four days my niece and her dog joined us, so we were on the hunt for beaches where dogs could be off-leash.

There’s this sweet dog
on Malua Beach
that tries to eat our sandals,
and on another day this little dog gets to run free for a bit,
but it’s not really allowed. Malua is an on-leash only beach.
At the north end of Broulee Beach where Candlagen Creek flows into the Pacific, a girl trains her dog to stand on a boogie board
but this too is an on-leash area.
We go to a couple of off-leash beaches that are not all that; small and a bit rocky, and not much room for frolicking.

The best place by far is the south end of Broulee Beach; eight hundred off-leash metres of golden sand and gentle surf. What a dog fiesta this is!

Malua Bay, and Broulee Beach are situated on what was and always will be Aboriginal land; the land of the Yuin Nation.

Cool. Enjoyed the photos AND your selected quotes.
I especially enjoyed the shot of Dog+Don standing over the sand lounging people wishing they’d get up and frolic too. 🙂

Thanks so much Kate. I’m not a dog person but I do love watching them race around on a beach. They have so much fun! Low tide at Spanish Banks the same. The gods of frolic!
Alas there was not much room for frolicking on the beach you mentioned – it was a disappointment.

Warming images dear Ali, and lovely to see you and Don. I was smiling as i read and re-read the on and off leash sagas of the dogs as this discipline is alien to Indian conditions or beaches 🙂

Thanks so much Narayan. It’s lovely to hear my post made you smile.
In Mexico dogs run free on the beaches. Is it the same in India?

Although I’m very much a cat person, I must admit dogs are more fun to play with, especially if you have the energy to match theirs! This is such a fun post filled with so much joy, Alison.

Thanks so much Bama. I am also a cat person! I would never want to have a dog, and have had a few different cats over the years. Cats are so cool! OTOH it is always fun to watch dogs racing around on the beach; they always look like they’re having so much fun.

What fun! A frolic with doggos on the beach. Lots of great action shots in this one, but my favorite by far is the 4th picture, the one prefaced by “this sweet dog.”

Thanks Felicity. Those dogs were having the best time. Some of the humans too I think!
That little dog was soooo cute. What a sweetie.

Looks like you had a great time at the beach. It’s hard to top a beach when it comes to people watching, or in your case – dog watching as on a busy day, it can be more fun to watch than any movie, with a real-life cast of rich and diverse characters. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

My pleasure Aiva. The beach for sure is one of the best places to just relax and enjoy the show, whether people being people or dogs being dogs, or vice versa 😂 or sometimes just watching the waves come and go. A photographers dream pretty much.
Have a lovely day.

You are so right, Alison, one can only smile at frolicking dogs. Thanks!
This timeless wisdom from Greek philosopher Pythagoras caught my eye:
“Animals share with us the privilege of having a soul.” Clearly!

I had so much fun watching the dogs. They seem so happy! I’ve done the same at Spanish Banks at low tide – people walking and their dogs going wild playing in and out of the water. Pure joy.

Thanks so much 🤗🙏 They were so much fun to watch. I’ve seen dogs running free in off-leash parks, but there’s nothing quite like seeing them at a beach. Entertaining indeed.

I’ve always thought that if you ever need to smile and laugh, find a dog 🙂
A beautiful photo essay, the quotes were perfect – and the photos genuinely exceptional. Julie is an excellent photographer, and I enjoyed the B&W photos you shot (especially the last two) – they seem to immortalize the laughter and smiles of the day. Also, the photo of you and Don is worth framing – what a beautiful pair!

Thanks so much Randall. I’m more of a cat person than a dog person, but seeing dogs run free on a beach is always such an enjoyable experience – they are so happy!
Julie *is* an excellent photographer. She was the first in our family to take up photography, and my first teacher. She was so patient with me.
The two B&W photos you mention are of my niece and her dog Sylvie. That is one dog that I totally fell in love with.

Thanks so much Terri. I loved watching all the dogs run free. They seem so darn happy! I’ve done the same on a beach in Vancouver at low tide and the dogs have acres and acres to run around in. Definitely fun.

Oh what beautiful memories and photos of the dogs and us humans interacting together. we have a rescue dog and he hates the water, if we pick up a hose he runs. I think it was because he was badly beaten up as a pup.
Some humans can be really cruel. Loved your pics. thanks for sharing. cheers Eileen

Eileen, I’m so sorry I’ve taken so long to respond to your comment! Somehow I missed it. Anyway thank you for your lovely comment. Watching the dogs being so free made me smile.
I agree, sadly people can be very cruel. Your rescue dog is lucky to have you.
