July 2021. I’m perched on this motorized “thing” making my way north via quiet side roads from the rental place to Queen Elizabeth Park and I’m pretty much freaking out. What is this thing I’m riding? Where’s the seatbelt? Where’s the gear lever? What are these tiny wheels? I feel as if I’m sitting on a chair, not a vehicle. It feels so unsafe.

I had thought to do a post about the best of all our travels, those places or adventures that really stand out as special and that are lodged forever in our memories as absolute highlights. One post. What was I thinking? It will likely be four or five posts. This is the first – the three best ways we travelled from A to B. 1. Mendoza, Argentina to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. 2. I’d not been to Bowen Island since 1974 even though it is part of the Vancouver metro area, and a mere twenty minutes by ferry from Horseshoe Bay; it's the closest island to the mainland. I leave early as the morning sun is beginning to settle in for the day, and at the terminal watch as the ferry comes in. It’s one of the smallest in the BC Ferries fleet, just enough to take a few cars and walk-on passengers like me. As we approach Bowen I hang over the railing of the upper deck on this bright sparkly day watching as we approach Snug Cove, a perfect name for the bay, the ferry terminal, and the town that butts up against it. I walk off the ferry into a little country town. The city has melted away. It’s as if I’m in another world, another country almost. It’s hard to believe that this is part of metro Vancouver.
