James and Terri at Gallivance gave me a nudge by inviting me to enter the Capture the Colour 2013 Photo Contest sponsored by TravelSupermarket.com. I’ve never entered a photo competition before, and despite being pressed for time I fell for it. Initially my thought was no, but then, for some unremembered reason, I was looking through some photos, and I suddenly saw one that would be perfect for the competition and that set me off. The competition asks you to publish a blog post showcasing five of your travel photos which best capture the colors blue, green, red, white and yellow. Here are my entries:

YELLOW
Amalfi, Italy. It was in Italy that I first discovered the beauty of laundry. I now have a whole portfolio of photos of Laundry as Art. It was the colours that captivated me – the bright colours of the walls, and the colours of the laundry. This post has photos of gorgeous Italian pottery, masks, and laundry. Viva Italia!

RED
Danza de los Chareos dancer. The Guelaguetza Festival is a two week celebration of the indigenous cultures of Oaxaca, Mexico. Every day we were entranced by astonishing dances from all the different regions of the state. Celebrations included a long parade through the city. Dancers from all regions, in a vast array of exciting and colourful costumes, were waiting for the parade to begin. That’s when I caught this dancer standing a little aside from the melee. I posted about Guelaguetza here and here.

WHITE
La Manzanilla, Jalisco, Mexico. We spent four months in La Manzanilla. These two beauties belong to Karen, our yoga teacher there. I’d tried several times, without much success, to photograph the cat. Her eyes really are that blue. Then one morning as we arrived for yoga there they were posing perfectly for me.

GREEN
Pondicherry, India. We were living in Tiruvannamalai and went to Pondicherry for a day. It’s much like any other Indian city except for the old French Quarter that has a wonderful colonial charm and the houses are brightly coloured. I couldn’t resist this blackbird posing perfectly against the bright green house with its yellow fence. The photo is included in this post.

BLUE
Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, India. We lived in Tiru for a few months. This is the first of several posts about life in this Indian town. The photo is actually the door to our cleaner’s house though I didn’t know it at the time. I was just drawn by the juxtaposition of the cockerel and the blue door. The photo was originally posted here.
